Wells Fargo still lends in four main ways: personal loans, mortgages, auto loans through car dealers and credit cards. Each has its own rules, and the biggest one applies to personal loans. Wells Fargo lends up to $100,000, twice the maximum at U.S. Bank, with no origination fee, but only if you've been a customer for at least 12 months.

The bank has also stepped back from several products people still search for, including home equity lines of credit and student loans. You'll find what's available, what isn't and who qualifies below.

Can you get a Wells Fargo personal loan if you're not a customer?

No. Wells Fargo says plainly that it only offers personal loans to existing customers, and your account must have been open for at least a year. If you're new to the bank, you'll have to wait, or look at a lender that accepts non-customers, such as U.S. Bank.

    Wells Fargo personal loan requirements

Beyond the 12-month customer rule, Wells Fargo asks for information about your job, income and debts, and runs a credit check. It doesn't publish a minimum credit score, but it told NerdWallet that borrowers need at least fair credit. You must be 18, or older in Alabama, Mississippi and Nebraska, where the age of majority is higher.

The loan is in your name only. Wells Fargo doesn't accept co-signers or co-borrowers, and it doesn't offer secured personal loans, so your own credit and income have to carry the application.

Wells Fargo personal loan rates and terms

Wells Fargo personal loan APRs ranged from 6.74% to 26.74% as of July 10, 2026. You can borrow $3,000 to $100,000 and repay over 12 to 84 months, although loans under $5,000 are limited to three years. There's no origination fee, no closing fee and no prepayment penalty; late fees can apply.

The 6.74% floor assumes excellent credit, a loan of at least $10,000 over three years and a 0.25-point relationship discount. To get that discount you need a qualifying Wells Fargo checking account and automatic payments from a Wells Fargo account.

The term you pick changes the cost more than you might expect. Wells Fargo's own example is $17,000 at 13.99% over 48 months, or $464 a month. Here's the same loan over other terms, at the same rate for comparison:

Wells Fargo Personal Loan Payment Examples (Scroll to view more →)
    Term Monthly payment Total interest
    24 months $816 $2,587
    48 months $464 $5,294
    84 months $318 $9,753

Stretching the loan to seven years lowers the payment by about $146 compared with four years, but nearly doubles the interest. In practice, Wells Fargo may quote a different rate for each term.

Using a Wells Fargo loan to consolidate debt

Debt consolidation is one of the main uses Wells Fargo promotes, along with home improvement and big purchases. Unlike some banks, it can send the money straight to your other creditors, and according to NerdWallet those payments go out the same day the loan funds.

Wells Fargo adds its own warning: consolidating doesn't automatically mean paying less. If the new loan has a longer term than your current debts, you can end up paying more interest overall, as the table above shows.

Wells Fargo Flex Loan: $250 or $500

For small gaps, some Wells Fargo customers see a Flex Loan offer in the mobile app. You borrow $250 for a flat $12 fee or $500 for $20, and repay in four monthly installments; on $250, that's $65.50 a month. There's no interest and no late fee. The APR works out to 22.82% on $250 and 19.05% on $500.

There's no application: the offer either appears in your app or it doesn't, and Wells Fargo doesn't say what decides it. The money lands in your Wells Fargo account right after you accept.

How to apply for a Wells Fargo personal loan

Sign in to Wells Fargo online or in the app and check your rate. That step is a soft credit pull with no effect on your score. If you go ahead, the full application triggers a hard pull, and most applicants get a decision the same day. Wells Fargo says 97% of customers received their money the day they signed, based on July to September 2026 data.

    Wells Fargo mortgages

Unlike its personal loans, Wells Fargo mortgages are open to anyone. The bank offers conventional fixed- and adjustable-rate loans, jumbo loans, FHA, VA and USDA loans, and refinancing. You can buy with as little as 3% down, and the minimum credit score is 620.

Wells Fargo also runs programs aimed at first-time and lower-income buyers:

    • Dream. Plan. Home. A 3% down payment mortgage with a closing cost credit of up to $5,000 in eligible areas, for buyers earning up to 80% of the area median income.
    • Homebuyer Access Grant. Up to $10,000 toward the down payment in eligible areas, for buyers earning up to 120% of the area median income.

Existing customers can get something extra. With $20,000 to $249,999 in assets at Wells Fargo, you may qualify for up to $1,000 off closing costs; with $250,000 or more, rate discounts of 0.125 to 1 percentage point.

    Wells Fargo auto loans

You can't apply for a Wells Fargo car loan on its website. Wells Fargo finances new and used cars only through its network of nearly 11,000 dealerships, so you get the loan by asking the dealer to arrange Wells Fargo financing. It doesn't publish its auto loan rates.

That also means two common needs aren't covered: Wells Fargo doesn't finance cars bought from a private seller, and it doesn't refinance existing auto loans. For a private-party purchase, a Wells Fargo personal loan can be used instead, if you meet the 12-month rule.

    Wells Fargo credit cards

Wells Fargo's card lineup centers on three no-annual-fee cards, plus travel and hotel cards.

What Wells Fargo no longer offers

    Does Wells Fargo offer HELOCs?

Not to new borrowers. Wells Fargo stopped opening home equity lines of credit and home equity loans on April 30, 2020, and still turns down new applications. Lines opened before then keep working under their original terms. To borrow against your home today, Wells Fargo points customers to a cash-out refinance.

Can you open a Wells Fargo personal line of credit?

No. The bank stopped taking applications in 2020. After first planning to close existing lines, it decided in 2021 to let current customers keep them.

Does Wells Fargo do student loans?

No. It exited private student lending in 2020 and agreed that December to sell its $10 billion loan portfolio. Those loans are now serviced by Firstmark Services, part of Nelnet.

Can you refinance a car loan with Wells Fargo?

No. Wells Fargo only finances new purchases through dealers.
